Statesboro Street to Honor Revolutionary War Soilder Nicolas Andiaux

A street in downtown Statesboro is set to honor Revolutionary War soldier Nicolas Andiaux.

Georgia Southern University’s French professor, Dr. Olga Amarie, petitioned the city to name the street after Andiaux, due to his military service and contribution to the community.

Before settling in Statesboro, Andiaux fought in the Battle of Yorktown. To recognize his service, the city granted him 1,200 acres of land, which is known today as Mill Creek Park.

“We can show recognition for his service, for his sacrifice. He never went back to France when he came here,” Amarie said.

The Georgia Southern Museum featured an exhibit showcasing Andiaux’s legacy in the 1990s, but there has been little to no attention to his story since.

Lashanda Hicks-Griffin, interim director of the Georgia Southern Museum, emphasized the importance of preserving local history.

“It’s important to preserve history because it tells a story about where we’re coming from, where we plan to go, and how that motivates us to get the job done,” Hicks-Griffin said.

Despite his historical significance, Andiauz’s final resting place is still unknown. While the street could help ensure Anciaux is remembered, Amarie hopes the effort will lead to answers about where he was laid to rest.
