Georgia suspends gas tax as prices climb

The state of Georgia has once again suspended its motor fuel excise tax for 30 days, starting on Sept. 29, 2026.

The decision, announced by Governor Brian Kemp just a day earlier, comes as gas prices continue to climb. Throughout the state, regular unleaded gasoline cost over $4 a gallon on average prior to the pause.

Alyssia Brantley, a local driver in the Statesboro area, explained that she had been waiting for a decrease in prices at the pump.

“This whole week it’s been $4 a gallon and I’ve been waiting to see $3 for a long time and I know it’s only for a month but anything helps. I feel like it’s hard times,” Brantley said.

Since the suspension, gas prices in Georgia have dropped by over $0.30 per gallon on average. Going beyond the initial period, Governor Kemp recently extended the suspension to last through early November.
