Major changes to SNAP benefits could affect millions of Georgians

SNAP benefits have major changes coming up, potentially allowing for many Georgians to receive increased benefits.

Due to an annual adjustment that kicked in on Oct. 1, some families could see anywhere from $25 to $50 added to their monthly benefits depending on the size of the family and where they live.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are just over 2 million Georgias receiving snap benefits from the federal government.

The cost for these benefits was previously split between the states and the federal government. However, as a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the states will pick up a larger portion of that cost.

Statesboro Food Bank, which offers assistance to families through providing food, meal boxes and more expects an increase in demand for community support.

Jessica Ramos, Outreach Coordinator of the Statesboro Food Bank emphasized that for many families, services like The Statesboro Food Bank are often only used when a family really needs it.

“I think statistically, people do not come to us weekly; people come to us as needed. So, if their need is less, some families will come less to us, but we also feed eight continuous counties,” Ramos said.

An estimated 5 million Americans have lost SNAP benefits in the last year.
