Statesboro’s City Manager Search May Be Over

Statesboro City Council named Jason Boyles as the solo finalist to replace the retiring City Manager, Charles Penny.

Bringing over 25 years of experience in local government to the role, Boyles previously held leadership roles in the Public Works and Engineering department.

Boyles is a double eagle with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering technology and a Master of Public Administration degree. He also graduated from the University of North Carolina’s Public Executive Leadership Academy.

Boyles is no stranger to the City Council as he currently serves as the assistant City Manager. During his time in this role, he has worked closely with Penny and other members of the council to lead a multitude of initiatives.

Penny is retiring after seven years. During his time, Penny aided in the expansion of the Youth Program and several infrastructure projects, including Fire Station 3.

Penny and the City Council members recently came under fire with the recent proposed budget cuts after failing to raise the millage rate. Boyles will be taking on the nearly $1 million in cuts as the city manager.

The city manager role tackles more than just budgets. The position leads the city in day-to-day operations and as an advisor to city council.

Boyles is expected to take office on Jan 1, 2027.
