Georgia Southern’s Campus Recreation and Intramurals Aquatics program saw record participation at its Discover SCUBA event as students and community members got the chance to try scuba diving inside the Recreation Activity Center.
Discover SCUBA is held once a semester and introduces participants to scuba equipment and basic diving skills while also highlighting opportunities available through Georgia Southern’s Aquatics program.
“I think since I’ve taken over, we’ve done a lot better job staffing our facility,” Petrie said. “This semester I think we’ve done a much better job at picking up shifts, helping each other out, also making sure we’re doing what we need to do on pool deck.”
The event was coordinated between Georgia Southern Campus Recreation and Boro Scuba Company, a local business that provides scuba certifications and diving trips.
Participants first received classroom instruction about the equipment before moving to the Aquatic Center’s indoor pool. They were placed into small groups, fitted with scuba gear and taught basic hand signals before entering the water.
